How to Report an Incident

Reporting an Incident

Inmates may report an incident in person, through the inmate hotline (see below), through an inmate communication, or through the grievance system.

Inspector General Hotline

Reports can also be made by staff, inmates, or the public using the toll-free Inspector General Hotline at (877) 831-0389. Hotline calls are not charged to inmate phone accounts. This number may be used to report the following:

  • Abuse
  • Extortion
  • Fraud
  • Inmate prohibited conduct
  • Staff misconduct
  • Waste
  • Non-emergency fugitive tips
The Hotline is not to be used for general complaints. Inmates who report false information may receive a misconduct report.

All messages left on the hotline are reviewed each business day. If the information is credible, follow-up action will occur. These actions may range from a referral to an investigation conducted by the Special Investigations Unit. While callers are not required to identify themselves, it does allow investigators to discreetly contact them. The Inspector General requests callers leave as much information as possible to aid the investigators.

There are two hotline numbers: one for inmates and one for public/staff. The phone number for inmates is restricted to direct dialing only from the inmate phone system. The inmate number cannot be accessed from any Department of Corrections (DOC) staff phone or community phone.
