At 10:05 p.m. on Saturday February 14, 2004, Inmate Jeffrey Beers was found hanging in his single cell in the Disciplinary Segregation Unit at Oregon State Penitentiary in Salem. Staff performed CPR but were unable to revive him. He was pronounced dead on the tier. The State Police are investigating.
 
Inmate Beers was serving a 13-month sentence for unauthorized use of a motor vehicle from Umatilla County. He was admitted on January 28, 2004 and had a projected release date of November 1, 2004. He was serving concurrent probation sentences for possession of a controlled substance, two counts of unauthorized use of a motor vehicle and mischief.
