Prison in Lakeview Opens Friday

Members of the media and the public are invited to join the officials of the Oregon Department of Corrections, the Town of Lakeview and Lake County to commemorate the opening of the state's 13th prison on Friday in Lakeview.

The keys to Warner Creek Correctional Facility (WCCF), a 400-bed men's minimum security work camp, will officially be turned over to Director Max Williams and Superintendent Chuck Seeley at a 9 a.m. ceremony. Tours will follow.

The prison will employ more than 100 people, about half of whom are from the Lake County region.

Inmates who are classified minimum custody and are within three years of release will begin to arrive in September. Many will prepare for their transition out of prison by participating in community work crews.

The prison site comprises 91 acres, but the facility occupies less than 15 acres. The facility is approximately 117,000 sq. ft. , and includes areas for inmate housing, work and education programs, health services, food services, physical plant, warehouse and storage, vehicle maintenance, administration and other related functions.

Construction of WCCF was put on hold in the fall of 2002 due to the state's budget situation. The 2003-2005 Legislatively Adopted Budget included authority to restart the prison's construction.

WCCF is located at 20654 Rabbit Hill Road (formerly County Road 2-18). The site is about 3 1/2 miles north of Lakeview, off Highway 395.
