An Oregon State Penitentiary inmate attempted to escape last night while on an outside medical trip to Salem Hospital's emergency room.

Inmate David Douglas Schmidt, 32, attempted to leave a treatment room at the hospital at approximately 10:55 Tuesday evening, December 19, by shoving past Correctional Corporal Chad Scott who was standing between him and the door.

Corporal Scott pushed inmate Schmidt, who was restrained by hand and leg restraints, back onto the bed in the room. Correctional Officer Tim McClaughry assisted by pinning Schmidt to the bed. As the inmate continued to resist, hospital security staff assisted Corporal Scott and Officer McClaughry while waiting for Salem Police officers to arrive.

Inmate Schmidt continued to resist the Corrections staff and hospital security. After warnings to Inmate Schmidt were ignored, Salem Police officers administered a short taser burst. Inmate Schmidt immediately became cooperative. Additional prison staff arrived and assisted in escorting inmate Schmidt back to the prison without further incident.

Inmate Schmidt was incarcerated in March 2005 and is serving time on Jackson County convictions of Assault II, Felon with a Weapon, and Attempted Kidnapping I. His earliest release date is August 2010.
