Inmate Escapes from Shutter Creek Correctional Institution
A minimum-custody inmate escaped Friday evening, May 5, from Shutter Creek Correctional Institution near North Bend. Matthew Jones, 31, failed to report to a group activity at 6:45 p.m. He was last seen at dinner.
The minimum-security prison was immediately locked down. Officers initiated a search of the facility, its grounds and its perimeter without locating Inmate Jones. The Oregon State Police, the Coos County Sheriff, and local police departments were notified. Jones' method of escape is under investigation.
Jones was incarcerated in September 2004. He was serving time for Theft I and Burglary II convictions from Multnomah County. He had concurrent probation sentences from Washington County for Supplying False Information, Theft I and Driving While Suspended/Revoked. His projected release date had been December 2007.
Jones is described as a white male with brown hair and hazel eyes. He is 5'8" tall and weighs 140 lb. He was last seen wearing blue jeans and a blue chambray shirt, both stenciled in orange with the word "inmate."
Shutter Creek Correctional Institution is a minimum-custody prison. Today's midnight census was 258.
