Fire at Oregon State Penitentiary
 
At approximately 12:53 p.m. a fire was detected at the Oregon State Penitentiary vocational training building. The Fire Department was contacted and staff responded immediately to the area. The fire was extinguished and is currently under investigation by the State Fire Marshal.
 
The vocation training building is located on the northeast corner of the grounds within the walls of the Penitentiary. The section of the building where the fire was located is a storage area.
 
No inmates or staff were in the immediate area when the fire broke out. The Penitentiary conducted an emergency count and temporarily suspended visiting access during the emergency.
 
The Penitentiary was built in 1886 and currently houses approximately 2,100 inmates.
