Posted: June 3, 2009, 12:00 PM

At 5:58 p.m. on Sunday, May 31, 2009, inmate Garrett Allen Sahly, 24, was found dead in his single-person cell in the mental health infirmary at the Oregon State Penitentiary. The manner of death appears to have been suicide. Institution staff members attempted to resuscitate Sahly, but their efforts were unsuccessful.

As with all unanticipated deaths of state prisoners, the Oregon State Police and county medical examiner were contacted and are conducting an investigation.

Sahly was convicted out of Lane County on one count of Unauthorized Use of a Vehicle, and one count of Burglary II. He came into DOC custody Feb. 5, 2009; and his earliest release date was Oct. 01, 2010.
