GENERAL INFORMATION
 
These employment opportunities are with the Oregon Department of Corrections' Behavioral and Health Services. There are current vacancies in Salem at the Oregon State Penitentiary and in Ontario at the Snake River Correctional Institution.

Applicants will be subject to a Computerized Criminal History and Motor Vehicles Division check as well as a thorough background investigation. Adverse background information may be grounds for disqualification.

TO QUALIFY
 
You must possess, or have the ability to obtain:
  • a Board Certification as a Psychiatrist; and
  • a Physician's license issued by the Oregon Board of Medical Examiners at the time of appointment.
 
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
 
These positions provide psychiatric assessment and treatment of inmates in a maximum, medium and/or minimum security institution. This includes coordination of care with Mental Health Specialists, Nurse Practitioners, and other Physicians. Treatment is to be provided in a manner consistent with best medical practices, the Oregon Department of Corrections rules, federal and state laws, state medical licensing rules, and interagency agreements. Major duties:
  • review admissions, perform psychiatric and medical evaluations, and provide psychiatric treatment to residents on assigned units;
  • assess client needs; review, implement, and update plans of treatment;
  • serve as member of the treatment team;
  • provide consultation services to contract psychiatrists and to psychiatric nurse practitioners;
  • contribute to written policies and procedures, including standards of care;
  • consult about the overall treatment programs of Behavioral and Health Services;
  • meet and consult with families of residents, interested agencies, and the public at large as the need arises in the course of resident care and treatment; and
  • prepare reports and testify as an expert witness, when needed.
 
WORKING CONDITIONS
  • will be expected to share the mission, vision, and core values of the department;
  • require being a role-model of pro-social behavior and having an attitude that conveys dignity and respect in the treatment of others;
  • must be able to acknowledge that everyone is capable of positive change;
  • work in close contact with inmates in an institutional setting;
  • may be exposed to chemicals, radiation, communicable disease, or other hazards inherent in a health care facility and correctional setting; and
  • are responsible for the provision of 24 hour on-call physician back-up to the institution in coordination with other Department physicians and medical decisions that affect institution security.
