GENERAL INFORMATION
These positions exist within the Behavioral Health Services of the Oregon Department of Corrections in Ontario, Portland, Umatilla, Pendleton, Wilsonville, Salem and Madras. The current vacancy is located at the Oregon State Penitentiary in Salem. This recruitment will be used to add names to the current list of applicants and may be used to fill vacancies as they occur.
Applicants will be subject to a Computerized Criminal History and Motor Vehicles Division check as well as a thorough background investigation. Adverse background information may be grounds for disqualification.

TO QUALIFY
You must have:
- two years of experience treating clients suffering from mental/emotional disturbance AND a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology or a closely related field; OR
- an equivalent combination of training and experience.
A Master’s degree in Psychology or a closely related field may be substituted for one year of the required work experience.
Transcripts must be submitted for all required and/or related courses.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
These positions coordinate mental health services for mentally ill inmates admitted to the Mental Health Infirmary (MHI) by completing mental health evaluations, facilitating groups, and identifying appropriate housing and program needs upon discharge back to general population. Major duties:
- review intake assessment tools and other collateral information and utilize standardized criteria to determine inmate eligibility for services and appropriate course of treatment in the least restrictive environment;
- conduct assessments through interviews with the inmate, personal observations and consultation with prescribers and identify a mental health code and level of acuity;
- provide crisis intervention and develop appropriate behavioral plans for inmates who may be aggressive, assaultive or at risk of self-harm; implement suicide monitoring procedures according to established policies; evaluate inmates placed in Disciplinary Segregation Unit (DSU) within 24 hours and make recommendations to the hearings officer regarding modified sanctions;
- monitor the progress of mentally ill inmates in treatment; assess and reassess the inmate’s level of functioning, medication compliance and side effects and evaluate level of assistance needed upon discharge to general population; refer to mental health housing, day treatment or general population groups as appropriate;
- develop a comprehensive treatment plan for assigned mentally ill inmates where inmate goals are determined and appropriate interventions are developed and modified as necessary; coordinate and integrate services with other treatment staff; monitor inmate progress and compliance with treatment activities; provide individual counseling and facilitate groups that utilize a broad range of evidenced based curriculum that increases distress tolerance and other cognitive based coping skills; review inmate charts, staff inmate concerns and make case presentations;
- consult with institution release counselor to identify inmate needs at release that may include assistance with completion of financial applications for medical benefits, social security applications, follow-up mental health appointments, and structured community placements; coordinate reach-in visits with outside agencies involved in community supervision;
- complete written documentation of contact with inmates according to established procedure and ensure information is available to other members of the treatment team; complete timely responses to inmate communications based on institution policy; complete required consents for treatment and inform inmates of confidentiality policies and state and federal laws; and
- attend staff, committee and other scheduled meetings to discuss and provide input concerning behavior plans and other critical inmate needs; attend and participate in in-service training, workshops, seminars, and continuing education programs to enhance knowledge, skills and abilities related to job performance; present in-service training to other staff.

- are exposed to hazards involving contact with mentally ill or emotionally disturbed offenders in correctional treatment settings;
- must work alone with inmates; and
- require vigilance and awareness.

a) the setting(s) and types of patients with which you worked; b) the number of years and percentage of time you provided these services in each setting (if part-time, indicate the number of hours per week); c) the tools or procedures you used in conducting these evaluations; d) whether you worked as an independent or supervisory professional, as a member of a treatment team with major responsibility for decisions, or under the direction of a supervisor or treatment team.
- Describe your experience in developing and implementing treatment plans for persons with mental illness including:
a) the setting(s) and types of patients with which you worked; b) the number of years and percentages of time you provided these services in each setting (if part-time, indicate the number of hours per week); c) the types of services planned and implemented; d) whether you worked as an independent or supervisory professional, as a member of a treatment team with major responsibility for decisions, or under the direction of a supervisor or treatment team.
- Describe your experience providing individual and group treatment to persons with mental illness including:
a) the setting(s) and types of patients with which you worked; b) the number of years and percentage of time you provided these services in each setting (if part-time, indicate the number of hours per week); c) the types of group or individual treatment provided (e.g. skill-building, process psychotherapy); d) whether you worked as an independent or supervisory professional, as a co-facilitator or primary therapist, or under direct supervision.
