GENERAL INFORMATION
This position is with the Criminal Justice Division of the Oregon Department of Justice, located in Salem, Oregon. The Criminal Justice Division is a law enforcement agency that conducts state-wide investigations and prosecutions concerning a broad array of criminal activity, and specializes in organized crime and aggravated murder cases. The Division also operates the State’s Criminal Intelligence Unit. This recruitment will be used to establish a list of qualified applicants for one of our legal secretary positions and will be used to fill the current vacancy only.
Because of the sensitivity of this position, final applicants will be subject to a Computerized Criminal History, Driver and Motor Vehicle Services check, as well as an extremely thorough background investigation. Adverse background data may be grounds for immediate disqualification.

TO QUALIFY
Your PD100 application form will be reviewed to verify that you meet the minimum qualifications stated in this section. To receive credit, your application form must clearly show that you have:
Two years of clerical/secretarial experience which included at least one year as a legal assistant or secretary for an attorney or judge or performance of legal support duties (such as preparing legal documents, maintaining legal records or researching legal information). Experience must include proficiency in word processing software.
College coursework or training in Office Technology that included courses in legal terminology and legal office procedures may substitute for up to one year of the general clerical/secretarial experience (1 year = 40 quarter hours/30 semester hours).
To receive credit for a degree or coursework in a related field, you must submit a photocopy of your transcripts.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Legal Secretaries provide a wide variety of legal support to department prosecutors and special agents.
Duties of this position include but are not limited to: drafting and editing of legal documents and law enforcement reports, transcription of witness interviews, discovery, opening and maintaining files, calendaring matters, coordinating trial and witness schedules, preparing subpoenas, frequent phone contact with law enforcement and citizenry, research, making travel arrangements, and assisting in the organization of law enforcement training. Candidates must demonstrate proficiency in word processing software. Candidates should also be able to work with sensitive, sometimes difficult subject matter, including graphic criminal evidence.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Must be able to meet deadlines with short notice, which may require some evening or weekend work.
Must be able to multi-task.
There is an open office environment with noise from telephones, foot traffic, printers, phone conversations, and office equipment.
Must maintain confidentiality with sensitive case information.
Must be able to operate various computer programs, including Microsoft Word.
Must be able to deal with citizens who may be irate and hostile.
Must be able to work within a law enforcement environment where graphic criminal activity is openly discussed.
Must be able to lift boxes of supplies and move from one location to another.
Must possess a valid driver's license and maintain a good driving record.
