Still working on your tax return? The Department of Revenue offers helpful tips.
04/10/2009
SALEM—The personal income tax filing deadline is April 15, less than a week away. Many Oregonians are still preparing their tax returns. The Department of Revenue offers these tips to help you.
  • File electronically—You'll receive your refund faster, get confirmation we've received your return, and you won't have to do the math. Visit our website to see if you qualify for free e-filing.
  • Double check direct deposit account numbers—If you ask us to deposit your refund directly into your account make sure the bank routing and account numbers are correct.
  • Electronic Payments—Electronic payment options are convenient, safe and secure methods for paying taxes. You can authorize an electronic funds withdrawal, or use a credit card or a debit card. For more information on electronic payment options, visit our e-payments web page.
  • Federal tax subtraction—The federal tax subtraction on your Oregon return is limited to $5,600 or your federal tax liability, whichever is less, and there are other limits based on your filing status. When you claim the 2008 federal tax subtraction on your Oregon income tax return, reduce it by the amount of the 2008 economic stimulus payment you received. If you don't remember how much you received, check with the IRS online.
  • Check your math—Mathematical errors cause delays in the processing of paper tax returns.
  • Sign and date your return—Your paper return isn't complete until you've signed it.
  • Mailing your payment—People sending a payment should make the check out to "Oregon Department of Revenue." Include Form 40-V, the payment voucher, with your payment and tax return.
  • File on time—File your return, or an extension to file with the IRS, by April 15. Remember, the extension of time to file is not an extension of time to pay.
After you've filed your return you can check the status of your refund at www.oregonrefund.com.
