GENERAL INFORMATION
 
These positions are in the Survival Skills Section of the Training Division.  The Survival Skills Section provides skill training in a variety of venues including Firearms, Defensive Tactics, Building Searches, and Health and Fitness.
 
These positions are crucial to the agency’s ability to accomplish its Mission

Applicants will be subject to a Computerized Criminal History and Driver and Motor Vehicle Services check as well as a thorough background investigation.  Adverse background data may be grounds for immediate disqualification.
 
Employees of the Department are required to meet the highest standards of professional conduct and ethics while on the job, and also to maintain those same high standards when taking actions in their personal lives that could reflect on the Department.
 
All department employees are responsible for upholding the mission of DPSST by promoting excellence in public safety through the development of professional standards and the delivery of quality training.  DPSST is the state training academy for law enforcement officers, corrections officers, parole and probation officers, firefighters, telecommunicators, and emergency medical dispatchers.  It is also the regulatory agency that enforces employment and training standards for the above listed public safety disciplines and licenses proprietary security managers, security contractors and officers, polygraph examiners, and private investigators.  DPSST's constituency includes more than 35,000 public safety providers.

TO QUALIFY
 
Your (PD100) state application form will be reviewed to verify that you meet the qualifications stated in this section.  To receive credit, your application must clearly show:
  • A minimum of three years of full-time work experience related to law enforcement. Experience must have included delivering structured Firearms training sessions or on-the-job training.
 
Preference may be given to individuals possessing a current Instructor Development Course certification in Firearms. 
 
Note:  You must have prior approval for secondary employment from your full time agency in order to apply.
 
Note:  Skills assessments will be held every 60-90 days, based on the number of applicants.
 
SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS
 
You must be able to obtain a Dept. of Public Safety Standards and Training Instructor Certification within 90 days of the hire date and maintain your certification throughout your employment with the Department.
 
Note: Please be sure to indicate your experience and training related to MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint in the Specialized Skills and Knowledge section on page 2 of the State of Oregon application (PD100).
 
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
 
Instruct classes; exercise a high level of communication and technical skills to deliver effective presentations and maintain effective class control and learning environment, and to effectively interact with inter- and intra-agency personnel.
 
Prepare, utilize and maintain equipment.  Ensure safety practices and protocols are followed.  Assist with creation of instructional materials i.e., written handouts, computer-aided instruction, scenario mock-ups, photographs, student workbooks; assists in the development of training manuals, test questions and evaluation instruments to enhance professional delivery of training. Prepare a variety of training and incident reports.
 
WORKING CONDITIONS
 
Interstate travel 15-25% of the time in all types of weather.  Presentation of programs in all types of weather. Working infrequent hours as needed. Frequent exertion and lifting of equipment.  Participation in firearms, defensive tactics, emergency vehicle operation confrontational simulation, building searches, physical fitness and related skills training if necessary; this could include exposure to extreme noises, temperature, reduced lighting, poor air quality, biting insects, and noxious weeds.
 
HOW TO APPLY
 
Submit a cover letter no more than 2 pages that details your training, instructor credentials and experience providing Firearms training to public safety officers AND  Your letter of secondary employment approval from your full time agency.
 
Be specific on types of training, frequency of training and the number of students your classes typically include.  Be sure the jobs where you gained the experience you describe in your answer are listed in the Work History section of your application form.

b) Cover letter addressing “your training, instructor credentials and experience providing Firearms training to public safety officers. 
c) Your letter of secondary employment approval from your full time agency.
