CUSTODIAN
(Custodian)

$1,837 - $2,381 MONTHLY


The Facilities Section with the Department of Public Safety Standards and Training is currently recruiting for three full time Limited Duration Custodian positions.  These positions are funded July 01, 2009 thru June 30, 2011.  The Facilities section of the Bureau of Operations and Technology Division oversees maintenance, housekeeping, food delivery and grounds security services ensuring that regulatory standards are met for the provision of a safe, sanitary, and humane living and working environment for students, staff, and the public.
 
Custodial staff will maintain approximately 350, 000 square feet of building and venue space throughout DPSST’s 213 acre campus. 
 
The primary purpose of these positions is to perform a wide variety of custodial duties at DPSST including providing reception duties during check in of students on some Sunday afternoon/evenings.

The mission of the Department of Public Safety Standards and Training (DPSST) is to promote excellence in public safety by delivering quality training and developing and upholding professional standards for Oregon’s police, corrections, and parole and probation officers, telecomunicators, emergency medical dispatchers, firefighters, private security providers and private investigators. DPSST also oversees polygraph examiner licensing and administers the Public Safety Memorial Fund. The agency’s purpose in the broadest sense is to maintain a highly-skilled, professional and ethical public safety workforce that provides excellent service to the citizens of Oregon.
 
DPSST provides basic intermediate, advanced and leadership/management training and certification maintenance to more than 30,000 public safety professionals and accredits courses and instructors. Basic criminal justice training courses range in length from two weeks to 16 weeks. Specialty criminal justice, fire, private security provider or private investigator training courses range from one day to two weeks in duration.
 
DPSST operates a full-service residential training academy.  At any given time there can be up to 350 students in residence and an additional 50 to 100 attending as commuter students. The agency also delivers regional training through staff positioned at locations throughout the state, through computerized technology, and through courses at the academy in Salem.
 
Representatives from DPSST’s constituency serve on a 24-member, Governor-appointed Board on Public Safety Standards and Training (BPSST) as well as on six statutorily created policy committees and one advisory committee to establish the minimum standards for employment and training of public safety officers, and to provide broad policy guidance on Oregon’s public safety needs to the Governor, the Legislature, and the DPSST Director. The board and committees also make recommendations on revocation or denial in cases of public safety professional misconduct.

TO QUALIFY

To receive credit you must clearly show you are a current employee of the state of Oregon, in a classified or management service position (not temporary) and have:           
  • Two year general custodial service.
  • Knowledge of modern cleaning methods and the use and care of cleaning materials and equipment.
  • Knowledge of applicable safety rules, practices and procedures.
 
Note:  Preference may be given to applicants who have worked in a public safety environment, and/or have experience cleaning/maintaining carpet, linoleum and slate.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
 
Provide custodial duties as requested.  These duties may include, but are not limited to: cleaning windows and door glass, emptying and cleaning of cigarette urns, cleaning of loading dock area, and weather related duties during inclement weather.
 
Clean office buildings: remove trash and recycle paper from centralized locations in each building, empty trash from outside receptacles, sweep/damp mop hard floors, vacuum/clean stairwells, vacuum/spot clean carpets, dust/cobweb, clean vents, clean and sanitize counters, tables, and sinks in break, work stations, and conference rooms, spot clean display case glass, clean and sanitize vending machine faces and buttons, and clean and sanitize elevator buttons and walls.
 
Clean and sanitize restrooms and drinking fountains, empty trash receptacles, and restock dispensers.
 
Strip and wax hard surface floors and clean carpets as requested.
 
Operate mechanical equipment that may be needed to strip, wash and wax floors, or wet-dry vacuums/extractors to clean carpets, use of small hand tools and ladders.
 
Perform emergency cleaning of buildings as required. Duties may require use of a State vehicle, van, or EZ Go cart.
 
Pick up and deliver janitorial supplies and equipment to various holding places in the buildings.
 
Check buildings daily for cleanliness and serviceability and report maintenance problems to immediate supervisor.
 
Provide coverage of student reception desk on check-in Sundays. Fill in for absent custodial staff as necessary to ensure performance of daily operations.
Provide other custodial duties as requested.
 
Participate in special projects and assignments as required.
 
Regular and consistent attendance is an essential function of all positions within the Operations and Technology Bureau.
 
WORKING CONDITIONS
 
This position requires the ability to perform prolonged physical labor, walk, bend, stoop, and climb stairs, ladders or other maintenance equipment in the performance of duties.  Standing and walking during entire shift on cement, tile, and carpeted surfaces.  Lifting, sliding, emptying trash containers up to 50-60 pounds.  Pushing/pulling vacuum cleaners (up to 20 pounds) and trash/restroom carts (up to 50 pounds).  Requires bending, reaching, twisting, and occasional climbing on a ladder.  May require occasional, short term periods of heavy physical activity. Most duties are performed between the hours of 6:00 a.m. - 9:00 p.m.  Days of the week and work hours may vary.  Some outside work is possible during inclement weather.  Daily use of chemicals for sanitation.  Receives periodic work related instruction and follows prudent safety practices in performance of all work activities.
