Miami Wetlands Enhancement, Tillamook County
 |
 |
September 2010 |
January 2011 during a flood peak |
This voluntary restoration project in the Miami River watershed restored ecological functions throughout 44 acres of tidally influenced wetlands. Since approximately 85 percent of Tillamook Bay’s wetlands are now lost, the project is significant in helping restore habitat for five species of salmonids: Coho, Chinook and chum salmon; and steelhead and cutthroat trout. Specific improvements include:
- Increasing freshwater and tidal channel complexity
- Restoring the historical character of the site’s vegetation through removing invasive species and planting native species
- Enhancing riparian vegetation along the river to provide shade, increase dissolved oxygen, and provide a source of wood for recruitment
Spearheaded by the Tillamook Estuaries Partnership (TEP), nearly 25 partners, including two private landowners, an advisory committee, and numerous local, state, federal and tribal entities collaborated on the project.

MCSO River Patrol on the Sandy River |
The River Patrol Unit was formed in 1960 to help decrease the number of thefts from boats and marinas, as well as to provide search and rescue operations. It is now the largest marine enforcement unit in Oregon. The River Patrol has provided outstanding assistance to the Department of State Lands in a wide range of situations occurring on state-owned land, including:
- Working to resolve a marina lease default on the Columbia River involving a homeless camp, thefts, assaults and drug manufacturing.
- Providing numerous boat trips for department staff to inspect state-owned land from the water.
- Removing derelict and abandoned vessels on state-owned land.
- Conducting multi-agency sweeps of illegal camps on state- and federally owned land at the Sandy River Delta.
