The Practicum Workgroupis charged with the following:
 
Action Plan (from GAS 2005)
 
  1. Identify the behaviors and outcomes to be completed during a Practicum. Gather data from other programs on their on campus Practicums. Evaluate and revise.
  2. Identify optional ways that the Practicum could be completed via distance.
  3. Determine the number of hours, and composition of the evaluation component and the observation component.
  4. Define the role of a local mentor. Define the minimum training and qualificationsfor a local practicum supervisor. Discuss how this might be integrated with thecurrent mentorship program that is in place.
 
Task Identification (from GAS 2006)
  1. Use established standards, such as NAEYC standards, to get to demonstrated outcomes, content, competencies and levels of competency.
  2. Define levels of competency. Match levels of competency with certificates and degrees. Standardize.
  3. For geographically accessible providers, how to get them to on-site practicum –time of day, time of year, substitutes.
  4. For geographically inaccessible providers, how to access competency and improve teaching practice.
  5. For overloaded, currently working providers, how to determine and manage competent, quality off-site practicum. Do we need train the trainers opportunities?

What are the behaviors that a student needs to exhibit in order to successfully "pass" a Practicum?  (draw on behaviors and outcomes from your own schools or experience)
What is the best way to collect, organize and evaluate the above information?
Should we poll the Community Colleges and compare outcomes within their Practicums?
How do we address the issue of evaluation of students?

Are we "more alike" or "more different"  in our expectations and the Practicums that are offered?
What is the "Practicum" solution/component for the student who cannot access a local community college due to geographical limitations or scheduling limitations?
