August 2011 Employment and Unemployment in Oregons Counties
In August 2011, Benton County saw the lowest jobless rate (6.5%) of all Oregon counties, and Crook County had the highest rate (15.6%). Between August 2010 and August 2011, jobless rates declined in all but three counties. Rates rose in Gilliam (+0.2 percentage point), Baker (+0.5), and Morrow (+0.6) counties over the year. Unemployment dropped by 1 percentage point or more over the year in 19 counties with Crook County posting the largest decline (-2.3%). Oregon’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 9.6 percent in July, and the U.S. rate stood at 9.1 percent.
Total nonfarm payroll employment declined from August 2010 to August 2011 for four of the state’s six broad regions. The Willamette Valley and combined Eastern Oregon counties saw the largest drop in employment over the year (-1.1% each), followed by the Central Oregon counties (-0.3%), and the Coast (-0.2%). Southern Oregon saw the largest employment gain over the year (0.4%), followed by Oregon’s combined five Portland metro counties (0.3%).
