Help is on the way for unemployed Oregonians

Unemployed Oregonians who have exhausted their unemployment insurance benefits may be in for some relief.  The United States Department of Labor announced that House Resolution 2642 has been passed by Congress and signed by the President allowing for the payment of Emergency Unemployment Compensation (EUC).

Oregonians with regular unemployment claims that were exhausted or expired after May 1, 2007 may be eligible for up to an additional 13 weeks of benefits under this law.  These benefits are 100% federally paid, and claimants weekly benefit amount would equal that of their original claim.
Potentially eligible claimants will receive a notification from the Employment Department by mail.  To be eligible for EUC, an individual must be unemployed and not eligible for any other benefits. The first effective date of the program is Sunday July 6, 2008.

The Employment Department encourages individuals who think they may be eligible for EUC to file their claim as soon as possible after July 6, 2008.  For more information regarding EUC, go to the department’s Web site, www.WorkingInOregon.org
