The number of claims for initial unemployment insurance benefits declined 51% in December 2009 compared to December 2008. The number of weeks claimed also fell, down 17%. However, the number of Oregonians claiming unemployment benefits (regular benefits or an extension) is at an all time high.
In 2009, $2.8 Billion was distributed in unemployment benefits to more than 360,000 Oregonians. For those receiving regular benefits last year, 53.4% used all 26 weeks of benefits. The average time someone was on a regular claim was 19.6 weeks.
Assuming there are no new extension programs, approximately 12,000 people will exhaust all benefits available to them in late March/early April. Another large group of exhaustions is anticipated in August.
