Unemployment
Initial claims for regular unemployment insurance benefits fell 10.7% from March to April, and 24.9% from April 2009 to April 2010. The total number of weeks claimed were also down, 22.6% from March and 26.3% from last year.
The total number of people claiming unemployment insurance benefits has been slipping from a high of more than 215,000 in January, however, the total remains above the figure for this time last year.
Extension programs for unemployment benefits are beginning to phase out. The Emergency Unemployment Compensation (EUC) will cease new filings as of May 29, 2010. All claimants on EUC as of that date will be able to continue until their EUC claim exhausts.
The Oregon Extended Benefits (OEB) provides $19 million dollars in benefits. Currently over $13 million has been spent and over 10,000 people have received this benefit.
As long as Oregon’s unemployment rate remains above 6.5 percent, the Extended Benefits (EB) program will be in effect. This program pays an additional 13 weeks of benefits. While Oregon’s unemployment rate is above 8 percent, the state will also be in High Extended Benefits (HEB) which allows an additional 20 weeks of benefits.
