Unemployment Claims
Initial claims for unemployment insurance benefits in Oregon continued its downward trend in May. Initial claims fell 8% over the month from April to May and were down 22% from May of 2009. Weeks claimed were also down, 11% from April and 30% from last year.
A similar trend is occurring in the total number of individuals receiving unemployment benefits. From the peak in January, more than 31,000 individuals have dropped from the unemployment roles. While the total number of people claiming unemployment benefits continues to be higher than a year ago, the number is declining.
The Federal Emergency Unemployment Compensation (EUC) program ended May 29th. The EUC program consisted of four tiers of benefits. Individuals who were on EUC as of May 29 will be able to continue on that program until their tier of benefits exhausts. For most of these individuals, they will be able to be moved on to Extended Benefits (EB) which, under Oregon’s current economic condition, offers up to 20 weeks of benefits.
In addition to EB, Oregon still has Oregon Emergency Benefits (OEB) available which may offer four to six weeks of additional benefits. This program will end when $19 million has been spent. As of the week ending June 12, $15.6 million had been paid out to 12,300 claimants. OEB is currently the last benefit available to unemployed job seekers.
