Filing weekly unemployment claims online
CONTACT:  Tom Fuller
WorkSource Oregon Employment Department
For the week ending January 31, 2009 almost 148,000 Oregonians filed a weekly claim for unemployment benefits.  For the same period a year ago, that number was just over 58,000.  This increase has caused the Oregon Employment Department’s weekly claim line system to reach capacity at times.

The Department urges Oregonians to use the fastest and easiest way to file, which is online at www.WorkingInOregon.org/ocs.  By filing online, there is no waiting, and no busy signals.  In turn, filing online lessens the load on the weekly claim line telephone system.

Currently, almost 50 percent of Oregonians filing a weekly claim do so online.  If that figure was increased to 70 percent, that would translate into approximately 30,000 fewer calls into the weekly claim line.
