Initial claims for unemployment insurance benefits continued its see-saw performance of the past eight weeks, rising by 2,946 claims after a drop of more than 4,000 the week prior. However, the total number of individuals receiving unemployment benefits fell by 4,249 to 197,573. It is the first time the total number of individuals receiving benefits fell below 200,000 since the week ending November 14, 2009.
The number of individuals on the Federal Emergency Unemployment Compensation (EUC) program dropped to its lowest since the week ending November 14, 2009. At its peak, more than 98,000 individuals were on EUC. The program was recently extended to June 2,2010. The bill did not add more weeks of benefits, but extended the period of time someone could file for EUC. The prior deadline for filing EUC was the week ending April 3, 2010.
For the most part, individuals who exhausted all of their regular claim and EUC, are able to be placed either in Oregon Extended Benefits 2 (OEB2) or the Extended Benefits (EB) programs.
