There was very little change in initial claims for unemployment benefits last week.  The 9,740 claims field were just 150 fewer than the previous week.  So far in 2010, the state has seen more than 9,000 new claims filed per week 13 of 17 weeks.

With the extension of the Emergency Unemployment Compensation (EUC) program, many individuals who had dropped off the unemployment rolls were able to begin claiming again.  The number of individuals on EUC rose by more than 5,000 from last week, and the total number of individuals receiving unemployment benefits increased by close to 3,000.

The total number individuals on unemployment benefits have decreased by more than 26,000 since the beginning of the year.  The week ending January 9, 2010 saw 227,184 individuals drawing unemployment compared to 200,556 last week.

The job market is slowing warming.  The Oregon Employment Department has seen steady employer activity through iMatchSkills.org (a service of WorkSource Oregon).  The Employment Department has 6,531 job listings representing 17,595 openings.  This represents an increase of 235 listings and 54 job openings over the previous week.  All job openings may be viewed online at www.WorkingInOregon.org, click on “Browse Jobs” on the right-hand menu.
