Costco Cuts Recruitment Costs, Then Ribbon
Largest Costco in the world bulks up with help from WorkSource
Costco ribbon cutting
The ribbon is cut on the world's largest Costco store
If you needed nearly 200 new employees to open on time, where would you turn? Well if you’re opening the World’s largest Costco in Hillsboro, you’d enlist the help of WorkSource Oregon.
Costco is a club warehouse that prides itself on providing value to its members. Turns out, they also know a thing or two about the value WorkSource Oregon brings to the table. They tapped the resources and staff at Hillsboro’s WorkSource Oregon Employment Department to help them open their newest and largest outlet.
The first connection was made by WorkSource Business Representatives Amador Aguirre and Marion Counsil while attending a Cornelius Chamber of Commerce event. Costco was featured at the event and the two recalled reading that Costco was going to open a new outlet in Hillsboro. They chatted with Costco’s Representative, got their human resource contacts, and offered Costco valuable services that promised qualified candidates, reduced recruitment costs, and a timely grand opening.
As the grand opening approached, Elise Northrop was selected as WorkSource’s account representative to handle the recruitment – a process that would consume about two months of her time. Elise became the single point of contact for the company. She met with Costco staff, looked over their positions and requirements, planned the mass recruitment, and also organized the interview process. She arranged for Costco to use the Hillsboro’s WorkSource Oregon facilities for a one-day interviewer training session and the many interviews.
During early meetings, Costco representatives explained that they usually go through at least ten applicants before hiring one. However, Elise was quick to explain how that ratio would be improved with her pre-screening skills and iMatchSkills, an award-winning online job matching tool. She told them how iMatchSkills goes beyond job titles and matches candidates on a wide range of options including their skills. By grand opening, Elise was able to screen the initial 500 applications to about 350 prior to interviews. Of those, Costco hired nearly 200.
“They were great. Whatever we needed, at any given time, whether it’s a room or whatever, they were there for us. It was much appreciated,” said Assistant Warehouse Manager Randy Richardson. “They set up all the interviews and gleaned through the applications, looked for those individuals that met our criteria for the positions we were hiring, set those up and accommodated us to go through the interview process on site.”
How would Randy rate the partnership?
“The service was great. It was a very smooth and easy process for us.”
According to Elise, Randy was also a big reason the recruitment was such a success. She says he kept in touch throughout, and was easily accessible.
The grand opening featured a ribbon cutting ceremony with Hillsboro Mayor Tom Hughes. It was covered live on Portland’s KPTV morning program, Good Day Oregon.
After the ceremony, the mayor commented on what the Costco addition means to Hillsboro.
“It’s a double benefit for the community both in terms of offering more jobs and also offering an opportunity to make your dollars go a little bit further.”
The mayor also explained how valuable WorkSource Oregon is to new and expanding businesses.
“I really believe that for this region to be successful, we must have organizations like WorkSource Oregon to plug new arrivals and expanding companies into workforce training and screening. Being able to do that is a huge advantage for us economically,” he said. “I know that the ability to solve their workforce problems ahead of the game, before they come here, and at a savings to them, has been a key factor in the successful recruitments we’ve had with companies that have come into Hillsboro. It’s a big factor.”
