A Portland Radio Personality Finds A New Home in Oregon
Michael Desmond - 1190 KEX
Michael Desmond - 1190 KEX

You never know who is going to find a job through the WorkSource Oregon Employment Department. Listen to this story told by Portland radio personality Michael Desmond:

"I'd been in Oregon about two weeks in the summer of 1996, after having been let go from my radio job in Kenosha, Wisconsin. My wife is an Oregonian, and we decided we'd move to the Pacific Northwest and I would try to find another radio job. We went to Central Oregon to visit her parents as I continued to look for work.

It was a hot day in Bend -- I went to the Bend River Mall with my wife, under protest, and was waiting for her to buy some clothes. I saw the Oregon Employment  Department's kiosk, and decided I'd see if there were any radio jobs available. I'd never used one before, and found it to be extremely user friendly.

I quickly found a position for a weekend news anchor at 1190 KEX in Portland, and printed out the information. I applied for the job, and got a call back from the news director, Brad Ford, about two weeks later. Though KEX didn't hire me for the weekend anchor position, they did hire me for another part-time, weekend position. That turned into a full-time position, and nine years later, I'm still here."
