WorkSource Honors Cornelius WalMart with Patriot's Award
The store employs many veterans and helps homeless vets
WalMart Store Manager Colt Benson has been at the Cornelius location since it opened a year
Colt Benson (L) receives Patriot's Award from Veteran Representative Kurt Carlson
ago August 2010. From day one, Colt and his management team have supported veterans and the issues affecting them. To honor that support, the Washington County Veterans Representatives at WorkSource Beaverton/Hillsboro awarded the Cornelius WalMart the Patriot's Award.
WalMart has helped veterans in a number of ways over the past year, but the most helpful thing for most veterans, is to put them to work.
"When we were opening the store and opening the hiring site, we worked very closely with WorkSource Oregon and some other organizations to help us in our hiring process," Colt said. "They were able to put us in contact with qualified veterans and it created a good partnership with the community and helped us get into the community a lot more."
"All of our associates bring a lot to the table. We've got to have people with diverse backgrounds and people who have had different experiences so we can also serve people in our community that have these diverse backgrounds and different experiences in life. They buy the same things. They come in and add a lot to our team."

When asked how it feels to be honored by the Patriot's Award, Colt said, "It feels very good. We’ve done a lot to work with the veterans over the year I’ve been in Oregon. I’ve been able to work with Kurt (veterans rep.) and be able to work with the Lacey's House and also with the veterans who are employed here and work for us – they’re just an awesome group of people."
Lacey's House is Oregon’s first privately funded, full-service home for homeless veterans. WalMart made a generous contribution to them and supports its efforts to provide a safe and loving home to homeless veterans, and to assist them in successfully reintegrating back into society.
