ACCOUNTING TECHNICIAN 2
(Accounts Payable Technician)

$2,380 - $3,235 MONTHLY


The Oregon Employment Department is currently recruiting for one permanent full-time Accounting Technician 2 position located in Salem. This position is represented by the Service Employee International Union (SEIU). This recruitment may be used to fill future vacancies.

TO QUALIFY
 
Your PD 100 application form will be reviewed to verify that you meet the minimum qualification as stated in this section. To receive credit your application must clearly show that you have: 
  • two years of technical support accounting experience. One year of the experience must include the calculation, recording, and maintenance of routine accounting information; OR
  • at least 36 quarter (24 semester) credit hours from an accredited college, university, or vocational-technical school that includes 9 quarter (6 semester) hours in accounting.
 
Training or experience must include operating a ten-key calculator by touch and using a computer to enter, update, or retrieve information. To receive credit for required courses, submit a photocopy of transcripts.
 
This position requires successfully passing a criminal record(s) check. The circumstances of any
criminal activity will be reviewed to determine whether an applicant is accepted for employment.
 
During the current biennium ending June 30, 2011, Employment Department employees are required to take mandatory unpaid time off (furlough days). A furlough is a temporary excused unpaid absence from work. Upon your arrival, your manager will be meeting with you to determine the number of hours or days required to be furloughed.
 
POSITION PURPOSE
 
The Accounting Technician 2 audits, prepares and codes all Employment Department administrative accounts payable documents.  This is done by using bookkeeping/accounting skills to record, examine and reconcile expenditure accounts in accordance with statutory requirements, Agency policy, and general accounting principles and procedures.  This position acts as backup for the other Accounts Payable Technician positions.
 
MAJOR DUTIES 
  • Audit administrative invoices to ensure that extensions are correct, duplicate payments prevented, discounts are taken, proper approval for payment is present, and that payment is authorized and supported by the collective bargaining agreements or administrative rules.
  • Input and retrieval of information and data from the computer system is required.
  • Prepares, codes, and directs vouchers to proper Employment Department sections.
  • Identifies expense object codes, activities, funding sources, and DAS cash accounts.
  • Maintains and administers records necessary to prepare various cost and statistical reports.
 
WORKING CONDITIONS
 
The person in this position may come in to contact with hostile, angry, and emotional customers. In addition, this position requires extensive use of a computer to research and process information, sitting for longs periods of time, and frequent interruptions. This position is located within an open office environment.

COVER LETTER, not more than two pages in length that addresses the following questions: 
  1. Describe your experience using a spreadsheet or database in performing your accounting duties.
  2. The person in this position must utilize problem solving skills in order to identify vendor information or information related to in state or out of state travel, research additional needed information, and determine the action needed. What process do you follow in solving problems? Please provide an example of a problem and any research or steps you took to resolve it.
  3. Describe your experience working in a high production environment, in which it was necessary to process large volumes of work on a daily basis and within tight time constraints. Please include the type of work you performed and the deadlines you had to meet.
  4. The person in this position will experience numerous interruptions (phone calls from vendors and employees and in person) through out the day. Responses to questions may require research and follow-up. Please describe your experience balancing a high volume of work with interruptions due to phone calls and in person visits. How did you prioritize your work?
 
Preference will be given for responses describing work in an accounts payable environment.
