2002 OR Hanford Cleanup Board Activities
The Oregon Hanford Cleanup Board met three times during 2002 in Oregon communities along the Columbia River. The board focused these meetings on gathering information about the Hanford Site´s threats to the Columbia River in keeping with Governor John Kitzhaber´s 1996 charge to the board to take steps to protect the Columbia River. The year´s meetings culminated with the report River Without Waste: Recommendations for Protecting the Columbia River from Hanford Site Nuclear Waste.

At its March meeting in Cascade Locks, the board heard presentations and gathered information about
  • Columbia River water quality standards and monitoring
  • Setting and monitoring drinking water standards
  • Hydrogeology, groundwater flow and cleanup
  • Groundwater contamination at Hanford

At its June meeting in The Dalles, the board gathered and discussed information about the impacts of Hanford´s contamination and the regulators´ plans to protect the Columbia River from that contamination. Representatives of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the Washington Department of Ecology, Washington Department of Health and other agencies provided information about
  • Radiation monitoring and Hanford Site sampling oversight
  • Cleaning up Hanford´s groundwater contamination
  • Impacts of Hanford´s contaminants
  • Plans to protect the Columbia River

The board devoted its final meeting at Boardman in September to discussing and revising its draft report.

During the year, the board continued to monitor Hanford cleanup projects that are priorities for the State of Oregon such as tank waste treatment and the Spent Nuclear Fuel Project. Additionally, the Board expressed its concerns about the Draft Hanford Site (Radioactive and Hazardous) Waste Program Environmental Impact Statement in a letter to the manager of the Hanford Site. The U.S. Department of Energy ultimately decided to withdraw the document and develop a new one, which is expected to be released in late Spring 2003. The Board also expressed its support for establishing deadlines for work to shutdown the Fast Flux Test Facility (FFTF letter) and accelerate cleanup at Hanford (accelerated cleanup letter).
Governor Kitzhaber appointed Boardman Fire Chief Marc Rogelstad to the board. Jill Eiland of Portland resigned from the board.
