2003 Oregon Hanford Board Activities
Activities Summary
The Oregon Hanford Cleanup Board met three times during 2003, in Salem, Cascade Locks and Astoria. The Board received a letter of support from Governor Kulongoski articulating the Board´s mission and reiterating the Governor´s interest and concern about the critical issues affecting the cleanup of the Hanford Nuclear Reservation and the potential impacts to the Columbia River and to Oregonians.

The 2003 Oregon legislature passed a bill (SB 467) that changed the name of the Board from the Oregon Hanford Waste Board to the Oregon Hanford Cleanup Board, to better reflect the direction of efforts at Hanford and to emphasize the cleanup mission.

The Board said good-bye to chairperson Shelley Cimon and member Casey Beard, both long time members of the Board, and welcomed new members Robert McFarlane, Maxine Hines and Wayne Lei. New legislators appointed to the Board include Representatives Linda Flores and Steve March. Senator Joan Dukes was re-appointed to the Board this year. Lynda Horst replaced Sue Safford as Board administrator. At its January meeting in Salem, Board members Ms. Cimon and Ms. Germond were each honored for over fifteen years of service to the Board and its predecessor organization.

Speakers at the meetings included staff from Washington Department of Ecology, U.S. Department of Energy, Richland office and U.S. Department of Energy´s Office of River Protection. The Board heard presentations on various issues, including tank waste retrieval, construction of tank waste treatment facilities, relocation of the spent fuel stored in the K-basins, groundwater issues, transport of radioactive waste through Oregon, pending litigation about Hanford issues, and public involvement activities.
