2004 Oregon Hanford Cleanup Board
Activities Summary
The Oregon Hanford Cleanup Board met three times during 2004, in Portland, Hermiston and at the Tamastslikt Cultural Institute in Mission, Oregon. The Board took a tour of the Hanford site in May, along with staff of the Oregon Department of Energy. Governor Kulongoski visited with the Board during its October meeting and discussed the importance of the Board’s work to Oregon and its citizens.
The Board said good-bye to long-time members Norm Dyer and Barbara Jarvis, and welcomed new member Mary Lou Blazek-Smith. The departures of Mr. Dyer and Ms. Jarvis necessitated the elections of a new Chair, Paige Knight, and Vice-Chair, Larry Clucas.
Speakers at the meetings included staff from Washington Department of Ecology, U.S. Department of Energy, Richland office and U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of River Protection. The Board heard presentations on issues including tank waste retrieval, construction of the waste treatment facilities, relocation of the spent fuel stored in the K-basins, groundwater issues, transport of radioactive waste through Oregon, pending litigation about Hanford issues, and public involvement activities.
