Information for Tax Credit Technicians
Becoming a Solar Installer

Anyone interested in offering solar energy sales, installation or professional services should obtain both training, and must obtain the necessary licenses to legally do work in Oregon. Typical licenses include:

Becoming a Tax Credit Technician (TCT)
Photovoltaics:
 
To obtain Tax Credit Technician (TCT) Status for Photovoltaics:
  1. Complete a TCT Application and include technical certification. Acceptable certifications are Limited Renewable Technicians License (LRT) or North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners (NABCEP) EL Award.
  2. Review the TCT Training Presentation (below)
  3. Request the Solar Program quiz (open book). Quizzes must be returned within 1 day. Quizzes not returned within 1 day or do not receive a passing score of at least 70% must wait 30 days before retaking the quiz.
 
Solar Thermal: 
 
To obtain TCT Status for Solar Thermal:
    1. Complete a TCT Application and include technical certification. Acceptable certifications are the Solar Thermal License (STL), North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners (NABCEP) EL Award, or pass the ODOE Solar Thermal exam (closed book).
    2. Review the TCT Training Presentation (below)
    3. Request the Solar Program quiz (open book). Quizzes must be returned within 1 day. Quizzes not returned within 1 day or do not receive a passing score of at least 70% must wait 30 days before retaking the quiz.
 
Tax Credit Technicians 
 
To receive a residential tax credit for solar water heating and solar electric systems, ODOE requires that the systems be field verified by a tax credit approved technician.

To maintain status a technician must do the following every 2 years.
  1. Install/verify 2 systems*
  2. take 4 hours of technical training (continuing education)
  3. sign new annual agreement
  4. attend annual conference call update
 
Energy Trust of Oregon Trade Ally
 
The Energy Trust of Oregon offers a set of rebates for the installation of solar electric and solar thermal systems for both residential and commercial customers through their Trade Ally program. Becoming an Energy Trust trade ally requires program training, a contractor's license and insurance.
