David Oyler lived his life in service of others. Prior to his diagnosis of ALS, the disease that took his life in April of 2012, David served his community and country both serving in Iraq and stateside for the Department of Homeland Security.

He was an active supporter of The ALS Association, attending support groups and the Walk to Defeat ALS®. “David inspired others in the way he lived with ALS,” said the local ALS Chapter.  “He inspired [those with ALS] with his resourcefulness and positive attitude.”

His wife Shirley was his biggest supporter and caregiver. She enjoyed spending time with other patients and their caregivers. “We enjoyed listening to everyone’s stories and giving moral support and advice,” said Shirley.

Since David’s passing in April, Shirley remains an active member of the Chapter, continuing her participation in the  Walk to Defeat ALS®. This year, she walked in memory of her beloved husband and raised funds so others with Lou Gehrig’s Disease have hope for a treatment and cure.
