"Today I want to express my appreciation to the Coastal Conservation Association, lead petitioners Senators Girod and Monroe, and the Stop Gillnets Now coalition for their responsible decision to end the campaign in support of Measure 81. I am glad to see that, despite some understandable reservations, they have endorsed the Oregon Fish & Wildlife Commission process to reform the management of our Columbia River fisheries. This issue reaches beyond party lines and affects many legitimate interests in its complexity.

My proposal would transition the use of non-tribal gillnets out of the mainstem Columbia River and into off-channel areas while still advancing commercial fisheries important to Oregon’s economy and lower river communities. While I may not have agreed with Measure 81’s approach, I appreciate the focus CCA and the Coalition placed on the need to address the use of gillnets and overall lower Columbia fishery management.

It takes courage for a coalition of groups to decide to shift their focus after they've poured their resources and hard work into qualifying a ballot measure with considerable support. However, I firmly believe the Commission is the best venue for resolution of this issue rather than the ballot box, and I want to commend CCA and the Coalition for making the historic decision to end the ballot campaign and shift its focus completely into that venue.”

Is there a new "Oregon Way" of conducting political business?

The signs are promising. The latest one is Democratic Gov. John Kitzhaber's announcement that he won't veto any of the 2011 Legislature's bills beyond the florist-industry bill he killed earlier because it conflicted with federal regulations.

This is the same governor who earned the nickname of "Dr. No" for vetoing a record 203 bills or pieces of bills during his previous two terms as chief executive.

But in 2011, Oregon's leaders responded to the state's financial crisis by working together -- even when they disagreed. Acting with decency, civility and integrity, they set a standard for future legislatures and other public officials.

In the typical Oregon public school classroom, students of the same age work at achievement levels that often vary by two or three grades, sometimes more.

Oregon and Port of Portland leaders confirmed that a Korean airline will provide cargo service between Oregon and Asia.

Asiana Cargo will launch its service Sept. 2 from Portland International Airport. Boeing 747 freighters will move cargo to a hub in Incheon, Korea, Oregon Gov. John Kitzhaber announced at a Wednesday press conference. The service will operate Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays.

(SALEM, Ore.) –Governor Kitzhaber today sent a formal request to President Obama asking for a Federal Disaster Declaration for Curry County. The Governor’s request will allow assistance from the Federal Emergency Management Agency to help rebuild Port of Brookings-Harbor in Curry County. The port was damaged by tsunami waves that hit the Oregon Coast.

“Federal assistance to Curry County will help us take a big step toward rebuilding the port and getting Oregonians back to work,” said Governor Kitzhaber.

State and federal disaster assessment teams estimated damages at $6.7 million to the Port of Brookings- Harbor. Curry County meets the state’s criteria to request federal disaster assistance.

A signed executive order from the Governor declaring a state of emergency sets in motion a state and federal process for applying for federal disaster assistance.
