A Taskforce on Equality to Prevent Discrimination
In February 2006, the Governor issued an Executive Order (pdf) that established the Governor’s Taskforce on Equality in Oregon.
  • The Taskforce will analyze current law and consider whether changes are needed to guarantee that all Oregonians are adequately protected from discrimination in employment, housing, public accommodations and other opportunities, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity.
  • The Taskforce will review anti-discrimination laws adopted by eight Oregon cities, two Oregon counties and other states, as well as bills proposed during the 2005 legislative session.  The Governor specifically directed the Taskforce to focus on the actual effects in other states of such anti-discrimination laws, including any effects on business.
  • The Taskforce will provide a final report to the Governor by December 1, 2006.  The report will include recommendations for the 2007 legislative session.  The recommendations will address any changes to Oregon law needed in order to ensure that all levels of state government afford the same rights and privileges to all citizens, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity, including an appropriate legal pathway for grievance, enforcement and resolution if Oregonians experience unequal treatment or discrimination in either the public or private sectors.
  • The Task Force will hold public meetings and take testimony around the state.
