OregonTransportation & Growth Management Program
Education and Outreach Assistance
Through Education and Outreach, TGM works with local governments to expand transportation choices of Oregonians while strengthening the economic vitality and livability of their communities.
TGM outreach services are typically provided through workshops and other public forums. The workshops can be (and usually are) tailored to individual communities and address a variety of transportation and land-use issues. These include:
- pedestrian-friendly design
- connectivity
- density and design
- mixed-use development
- transit-oriented development
- walkability
- multi-modal street planning
- Special Transportation Areas
- street design
- downtown/commercial area streetscapes
- parking and parking management tools
- Main Street and downtown revitalization
- circulation
- traffic congestion
- pedestrian safety
- access management
- traffic circulation
- school siting and safe routes to school
TGM makes experts on these and other topics available to local communities. These services are provided at no charge to local governments in Oregon.
TGM outreach services are available to communities of any size, but the program's Main Street Road Show is oriented to smaller cities. Through this initiative, TGM works with small towns in Oregon to address traffic, parking, circulation, land use and other issues affecting the economic vitality of Main Streets.
Workshop formats are flexible, interactive, and tailored to individual communities. Workshop leaders – specialists in transportation and land-use planning, downtown revitalization, and other relevant disciplines – work with local public officials, civic and business leaders, developers, planning commissioners, and other members of the public. The goal is to explore local solutions to transportation and growth management issues through creative and proven strategies. The workshops are generally provided on a first-come, first-served basis.
While there is no direct cost to local communities hosting general outreach or Road Show workshops, participating communities are asked to do the following:
1. Provide a location for the workshop, preferably in or close to downtown, that can accommodate desired audiences and handle PowerPoint or similar presentations.
2. Identify key issues the community would like to address in the workshop.
3. Provide relevant background materials – e.g., local maps, planning documents, etc. – to the TGM consultants.
4. Promote the workshop by putting notices in local newspapers, distributing flyers and through other means.
If your community wishes to sponsor a TGM outreach project, please send TGM a short letter (1-2 pages) covering the following points:
- Describe the specific issue(s) or problem in your community that a workshop would address,
- Provide a brief background statement explaining the context for the proposed workshop. (Background might identify recent/imminent planning initiatives, recent problems or new challenges, and geographical areas within the community to receive focus.)
- Explain what you hope the workshop will accomplish.
- Include a letter or resolution from local decision makers – e.g., planning commission, city council, mayor – showing support for the proposed TGM workshop.
Send the letter to Constance Beaumont at the address below. If you have questions and/or would like to discuss an outreach project, you can reach Ms. Beaumont at 503.373.0050, ext. 277, or at constance.Beaumont@state.or.us.
The Oregon Transportation & Growth Management Program (TGM) is a joint program of the Oregon Department of Transportation and the Oregon Department of Land Conservation and Development. TGM supports community efforts to expand transportation choices for people. By linking land use and transportation planning, TGM works in partnership with local governments to create vibrant, livable places in which people can walk, bike, take transit or drive where they want to go.
