State of Oregon Sustainability Awards
Program
Governor Ted Kulongoski's Executive Order 06-02 entitled "Sustainability for the 21st Century" directs the Oregon Economic and Community Development Department (OECDD), to "coordinate the development of a Sustainability Awards Program to promote and advance the inclusion of sustainable practices in government and the private sector." Sustainable practices are broadly defined as those that strive to optimize an organization's financial, environmental and social performance.

The 1st annual Oregon Sustainability Awards event was hosted by the Oregon Sustainability Board and the Oregon Economic and Community Development Department on June 1, 2007, in Salem.

Eligibility
Any private, public or non-profit organization is eligible to apply. For evaluation purposes, organizations are grouped under the following classifications:
  • Small business (fewer than 50 employees)
  • Medium business (50-100 employees)
  • Large businesses (100+ employees)
  • Gov't/Non-Profit organization

Award Categories
There are two award categories, and applicants may choose only one category in which to compete for recognition.

Exemplar Award—Recognizes an organization for its comprehensive commitment to sustainability as reflected in its vision, strategy, policies and day-to-day operations. Organizations that demonstrate innovative leadership in sustainability "best practices" are encouraged to apply. Please refer to the Exemplar Award Guidelines for more details.
 
Focus Award—Recognizes an organization for its commitment to sustainability as reflected in a specific initiative or focus area, such as energy usage, procurement, product development, civic/social programs, etc. Organizations may apply for recognition in more than one focus area. Please refer to the Focus Award Guidelines for more details.

Apply during an open application time period:
  1. Choose one award category, view the corresponding guidelines and complete the application form.
  2. Submit the completed application form electronically as per the guidelines.

 
 
 
 

Exemplar Award—Guidelines and Application Instructions
Awarded to a business, government or non-profit organization for its comprehensive commitment to sustainability as reflected in policies and day-to-day operations. Applicants will be considered for an award using the following categories:
Small Business (fewer than 50 employees)
Medium Business (50-100 employees)
Large Business (101+ employees)
Government/Non-Profit Organization
The judges will use the award criteria below to evaluate applications, and there is no guarantee that an award will be presented in every category.

Award Criteria
Organizations should consider the following criteria when responding to "Part B. Organization Practices:"
  • The organization has integrated sustainability into its vision, business strategies, objectives, plans, policies and functions.
  • The organization has created new innovative standards and practices to guide its sustainability performance.
  • The organization is open, accurate and clear in the public reporting of its activities and its sustainability performance.
  • The organization identifies and manages key environmental and social risks.
  • The organization has derived economic benefits (cost containment, new revenue streams, increased brand loyalty and/or market share, etc.), attributed to its sustainability performance.
  • The organization exercises its "sphere of influence" by promoting sustainable practices among its employees, customers and suppliers.
  • The organization's environmental/social practices are being adopted by peers and/or considered leading industry practice.
  • The organization's sustainability strategy and initiatives have demonstrated maturity.

Application Instructions
  1. Download an application form, available during an open application period
  2. Complete Parts A (one page) and B (up to 5 pages)
  3. Optional—Include supporting documentation (up to 2 pages text—OR—1 MB of graphics). Word and text files are acceptable formats for the text and JPG, EPS, TIF or PDF formats are acceptable for the graphics.
  4. Submit electronically the completed application as an MS Word or PDF file and supporting documentation to: mark.brady@state.or.us
  5. If you do not receive automatic confirmation of receipt, please contact the program coordinator.
 
 
 
 

Focus Award—Guidelines and Application Instructions
Awarded to a business, government or non-profit organization for its commitment to sustainability as reflected in a specific initiative or focus area. Applicants will be considered for an award using the following categories:

  • The organization identifies and manages key environmental and social risks related to this initiative.
  • The organization has derived economic benefits (cost containment, new revenue streams, increased brand loyalty and/or market share, etc.), attributed to this initiative.
  • The organization's sustainability initiative has demonstrated maturity.
