Frequently Asked Questions
REGISTERED INTERNS
INTERNSHIP INFORMATION

1. Will my graduate degree need to be reviewed before I am officially registered as an Intern?

It depends on the college or university from which you graduated.  If you graduated in 2000 or later and your college was accredited (at the time you graduated) by a national accrediting organization --CACREP, COAMFTE, CORE -- or one of 11 board-approved programs, then your degree will not require review.

If your college was accredited by a regional accrediting body such as the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC), we will conduct a review to ensure that you have taken all of the required courses.  If your college was not accredited by a national or regional accrediting agency, your degree will not qualify you for licensure.

The Board will accept online graduate degrees only if they are earned from a program that was accredited by CACREP.

2. May I count my hours before I am officially registered as an intern of the Board?
  • No; you must be accruing hours under a Board approved plan, although some hours accrued as part of your counseling degree internship/practicum might count.  Degree program internship/practicum hours will not contribute to LMFT hours.
  • Up to 400 direct client contact hours from your degree program can be accrued toward an LPC license. No pre-degree hours can accrue toward a LMFT license.

3. How do I find a supervisor?

Talk to your peers, faculty members, agency, and professional associations about possible supervisors.   The Board  has a Supervisor Registry of LPC and LMFT supervisor candidates and approved supervisors posted on the main page of the website.  You are not required to choose a supervisor from the Registry.

4. What are the requirements for supervisors?

The qualification requirements for supervisors of LPC interns and of LMFT interns changed July 1, 2010.  Every supervisor must have a current, active Oregon license in a mental health field and must pass the Board's law and rules exam.  You can review all of the supervisor requirements in the Board's administrative rules --OAR 833-130.  Every supervisor must meet the criteria set in administrative rules in order for an intern's clinical experience to count toward licensure.

Your supervisor may not be a relative or someone with whom you have a personal relationship.

5. May I take my national exam at any time during my internship?

Yes. Once the board indicates that you qualify for registration as an intern, you may notify the board of your interest in taking the national exam.  We will then send exam information to you. You may take the exam at any time during your internship.

RECIPROCITY INFORMATION
APPLICATIONS BY RECIPROCITY METHOD
The reciprocity method of licensure is for applicants who want licensure in Oregon using supervised clinical experience while licensed in another state.  The Board does not grant blanket reciprocity but will review the other state's rules and laws for comparability.

In order to apply for Oregon licensure through reciprocity, the license from the other state must be currently active and without discipline.  The license in the other state must have been given based on a review of education, experience and exam standards and not through other means such as reciprocity, grandfathering, or waivers of requirements.

Other rules that apply to reciprocity include passage of a competency exam, a graduate degree from a regionally accredited college or university that includes specific coursework, and documentation of supervised work experience.

Administrative rules that govern reciprocity applications are in  OAR 833-020 Application Methods
