Notice To Hospitals And Imaging Facilities
The Board needs your help and understanding. It is not the intent or expectation of the Board to have all new modalities; MRI, Nuclear Medicine and Sonography licensed on July 1, 2010, when the new law takes effect. The Board considers this a transitional period and will be working with new modality applicants and current licensees adding MRI, Nuclear Medicine or Sonography to their licensure.
The Board needs your cooperation to make sure patient care is not compromised by joining them in this good faith effort to license these new modalities. Please ask your employees to send in their applications as close to the July 1 implementation date as possible. We will begin processing them in date order in accordance with our statutes and rules.
During this transitional period, the Board will not take disciplinary action against the new applicant or licensee adding MRI, Nuclear Medicine or Sonography for practicing without a license. Our soon to be new licensees and existing licensees should be allowed to practice their profession(s) during this transitional period.
This notice will be removed from the website and the transitional period will end at the discretion of the Board, however only after adequate time is given to our new licensing modalities to bring them in compliance with the new law. Thank you for joining our good faith licensing implementation. If you have questions please contact the Board at 971-673-0215.
Respectfully,
Thomas R. King, BSRS RT (R) Board Chair Oregon Board of Medical Imaging

ATTENTION: Effective July 1, 2010 New Licensing Modalities
Oregon Board of Medical Imaging (OBMI) www.oregon.gov/OBMI New Oregon Licensure July 1, 2010
The following new medical imaging modalities must be licensed as of July 1, 2010:
Nuclear Medicine: Any person who operates nuclear medicine equipment or uses radiopharmaceuticals on a live human body must have a license.
Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI): Any person who operates MRI equipment or places a live human body within the magnetic field generated by the MRI equipment must be licensed.
Sonography: Any person who operates sonographic equipment or passes energy through a live human body must be licensed.
All medical Imaging licensees must be credentialed by a credentialing organization in a medical imaging modality recognized by the Board.
The appropriate license applications are available online under Applications. Click on the appropriate modality and then on the specific application needed. Individuals who hold a credential will complete the Permanent Initial application for their appropriate modality(s). The licensing fee can be determined by using the online Fee Calculator as the applications indicate. The following are some quick bullet points for licensure:
1.) Download the Permanent Initial Modality License application and complete every field or question.
2.) Attach a colored photograph approximately 2 inch by 2 inch (Similar to a passport photo.)
3.) Calculate the appropriate fee using the online Fee Calculator and enclose a personal or business check, money order or cashiers check for the amount. Checks are made out to OBMI. The Board does not accept cash or credit cards for initial licensure.
4.) Attach a copy of your registry registration card(s) indicating you are current with CE and hold a current credential in the license modality(s) you are applying for.
5.) If the applicant or existing licensee has criminal history, the Board has not addressed; a letter of explanation, all court and police documents must be included with the application. Applicants and licensees with criminal history are required to appear before the Board for license approval. The next regularly scheduled Board meeting.
If you are currently licensed with the Board, as a Radiologic Technologist, Radiation Therapist or both complete the appropriate application for the new modality you wish to add to your licensure (Modality applications are part of your permanent record with the Board.) In addition, complete the Duplicate License Request Form and enclose it with your modality application and the $10.00 fee for each copy you need.
If the licensee or applicant has been working in the modality but is not credentialed:
If a person has been working in the field of medical imaging and does not hold a credential and current registration in that modality, the Board will issue a provisional license if the person meets the Board requirements. 1.) Complete the Permanent Initial Modality License application you are currently working or practicing in the field of medical imaging.
2.) Attach a colored photograph approximately 2 inch by 2 inch (Similar to a passport photo.)
3.) Attach on facility letterhead written verification dated and signed by the Medical Imaging Director or Human Resources attesting the modality of practice and the length of time the person have been working in the modality.
4.) Calculate the appropriate fee using the online Fee Calculator and enclose a personal or business check, money order or cashiers check for the amount. Checks are made out to OBMI. The Board does not accept cash or credit cards for initial licensure.
5.) If the applicant or existing licensee has criminal history, the Board has not addressed; a letter of explanation, all court and police documents must be included with the application. Applicants and licensees with criminal history are required to appear before the Board for license approval. The next regularly scheduled Board meeting.
After January 1, 2014, the Board will not issue any licensure in a medical imaging modality to a person who is not credentialed by a credentialing organization recognized by the Board.

The Governor's Link for H1N1 Information
Protect yourself, your family and your co-workers by staying informed. The Governor of Oregon has asked that this site be posted to all state agency web sites. It is always a good idea to check with your doctor on your health care, especially at this time of year. The fewer of us who get sick from either seasonal influenza or pandemic H1N1 influenza, the more we can reduce the impact in our schools and workplaces. Visit the state's flu Web site at www.flu.oregon.gov or call the state hotline at 1-800-978-3040.
