Child Care and Education Programs - Special Needs Care
GENERAL COMMENTS:

Inclusive child care provides numerous benefits for all involved. Child care is a natural learning environment, a place where children experience everyday, and typically occurring activities that promote and enhance development. Successful inclusion of children with disabilities does not just happen. Research has shown that developmental gains for children with disabilities may not occur by simply placing children with disabilities in programs with typically developing children. Successful inclusion requires continued commitment, planning, and collaboration.

The key to successful inclusion of young children in child care is the provision of training, technical assistance, and support to involved staff. Unfortunately, ongoing training and consultative support for child care providers on the diverse needs of children - particularly children with disabilities - is not always readily available.
