Parent Education and Support - Essential Components
 
The following components are based in research.
 
Accessible - Effective programs are delivered in a variety of locations with availability of public transportation kept in mind. When possible transportation and childcare are provided. Additionally, education services are provided both during the day and in the evening to accommodate people´s schedules.
 
Respect for Diversity - Families are more likely to engage in services that are culturally and linguistically appropriate. Effective programs value diversity. Quality programs recognize and appreciate the cultural bases of parenting and avoid stereotyping.
 
Strength Based - Effective programs build on family strengths and work to empower parents. Recognize the ecological nature of parenting - Education services need to recognize that families are imbedded within a community.

Family Focused - Effective programs respond to the unique needs of each individual family. Optimally, parents are involved in choosing service design and content.
 
Well-trained Staff - Effective programs are provided by staff who are well versed in the subject matter, have excellent interpersonal and facilitative skills, and who are sensitive to individual family needs.
 
Ongoing Supervision - Effective programs provide staff with continuous, high quality supervision.
 
Intensive - Interventions that are frequent and occur over a long period of time have more significant and sustained effects.
 
Variable -Effective programs offer a variety of techniques for parents to try instead of a "one way" approach.
 
Responsive - Effective programs work with families to address issues when they arise.
 
Connection to Other Community Services - Effective programs collaborate and coordinate with other community services to ensure that families are receiving all the services they need.
 
Voluntary -Parents who are voluntarily involved are more receptive to services.
