EPA is requiring new safety measures for soil fumigant pesticides to increase protections for agricultural workers and bystanders – people who live, work, or otherwise spend time near fields that are fumigated. The following soil fumigant active ingredients are affected by the new regulations:
chloropicrin dazomet metam sodium/metam potassium (including methyl isothiocyanate or MITC) methyl bromide
To assist applicators with the new requirements, ODA created a brochure outlining the requirements. The brochure is a summary and is intended to raise awareness of the changes. The full requirements are described in each soil fumigant label, so make sure to read and follow the entire pesticide label.
The new brochure can be found here: http://www.oregon.gov/ODA/PEST/docs/pdf/soilfumigation.pdf
ODA registration staff reviewed and accepted the revised labels for existing soil fumigant products earlier in October. The new labels will appear in the marketplace December 1, 2010. If you have leftover soil fumigant with old labeling, you should contact your Pesticide Dealer for instructions on how to handle the product.
If you have specific questions about the new regulations, please contact Janet Fults at 503-986-4652 |
