Brown Marmorated Stink Bug
The brown marmorated stink bug (BMSB), a relatively new invasive species to Oregon, may be entering people's homes this fall as it seeks winter shelter inside buildings. This insect is now common in the Portland area. Because BMSB is a major crop pest in Asia, any information about infestations outside that area is valuable. The public can help the Oregon Department of Agriculture determine the distribution of this pest by calling the Oregon Invasive Species Hotline (1-866-INVADER) to report possible BMSBs found outside of the Portland metro area. In order to confirm a report ODA requires a specimen. The hotline has details on preserving and sending suspect BMSBs. Samples should be sent to James LaBonte, Oregon Department of Agriculture, Plant Division (IPPM), 635 Capitol St. NE, Salem OR 97301.
