The report issued by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention contains some good news about nutrition in Oregon:

PAGE:  “Oregon has the highest median intake of vegetables– in other words, the number of times per day compared to other states. Adults in Oregon and California eat more vegetables than adults in other states and we are also among the highest in fruit consumption.”  :14

Stephanie Page of the Oregon Department of Agriculture says the news should be good for Oregon growers as well as the timing of the report coincides with the start of a seasonal harvest of local crops that provide good nutritional value:

PAGE:  “We’re probably about in the middle in terms of the percentage of acreage that produces fruits and vegetables. But it certainly is good news for our producers. Based on some of the other statistics, I think we can be pretty confident that some of those purchases are Oregon grown products.”  :15

Overall, the report shows fruit and vegetable consumption is low throughout the US, but Oregon and its neighboring states score high in many categories. While the numbers look good, Page is hoping Oregon can improve through more promotion, more education, and more access to fruits and vegetables. In Salem, I’m Bruce Pokarney.

PAGE says despite the strong numbers for Oregon, there is room for improvement:

“Thirty-two percent of Oregon adults reporting they consume fruit less than one time each day. So that is something we can certainly try to improve on. We can try to reduce that number down to zero.”  :10

PAGE says Oregon’s high consumption rate of fruits and vegetables is not restricted to fresh produce:

“We’ve got some amazing processors here in Oregon that produce frozen fruits and vegetables, too. So the freezer section of your grocery store, if you don’t have the fresh fruits and vegetables you are looking for available, is another place to go.”  :14
