Board of Agriculture looks to fill vacancies

Applications are being accepted, governor to make appointments

The Governor’s Office is currently accepting applications for two vacancies on the State Board of Agriculture. Positions to be filled include a public member and an agricultural producer. Governor Kitzhaber will make the appointments. While there is no set deadline for applications, the appointments will fill positions whose terms expires September 5, 2013.

The State Board of Agriculture advises the Oregon Department of Agriculture about programs, policies, and issues affecting the industry. The 10-member board meets quarterly. The governor appoints nine of the board members; the chair of Oregon Soil and Water Conservation Commission serves as the tenth member. The ODA director and the dean of the College of Agriculture at Oregon State University serve as ex-officio members.

State law requires seven of the appointed board members be actively engaged in the production of agricultural commodities and that the governor seek to ensure that these members reflect the diverse nature of agricultural commodity production within Oregon. Two board members shall be appointed who are not actively involved in the agricultural industry to act as representatives of the public’s interests.

Those interested in applying for the State Board of Agriculture must complete an interest form and return it to the Governor’s Office.
