Youth Tractor Safety Training in Oregon

| Introduction |
|
Farmers and ranchers who employee minors less than 18 years of age are required to hire those who have completed and passed a tractor safety-training program.
Most of the entities that offer this training are listed on this Web site. If we've missed a program or don't have the most up-to-date information about a specific program, please contact us.
Many trainings are provided through high school FFA programs and the student must be enrolled in FFA to participate. Some of the programs are open to all students. Check with the respective school contact.
Other options include some local community college agriculture programs, and Oregon State University Extension programs (offered at a limited number of locations).

Klamath and Lake counties
OSU Extension is conducting a class in Klamath Falls for Klamath and Lake County youth. Usually scheduled in June right after school gets out for the summer. The dates vary but the course usually runs three days in the early part of June.

Central Oregon
A three day Central Oregon Farm and Tractor Safety Training and Certification Course, sponsored by the OSU Extension Service, is offered in June at the Deschutes County Fairgrounds and Expo Center in Redmond. Training includes classroom work as well as hands-on experience with a variety of tractors and implements. This class is open to those who will be 14 to 17 years of age during the upcoming agricultural season. Registration fee for tractor safety training is $50. Registration deadline is June 1 and class size is limited to 40 students.

Amity
We offer a tractor certification class in cooperation with the 4-H. We plan on holding one again in May.

Banks
We offer a community-wide Tractor Safety Course in Banks about every other year in the spring/early summer. The course is typically 3-4 evenings plus an all-day Saturday and costs $50.

Burns
We are offering the youth tractor safety training at Burns High School. If possible I run the curriculum through one of my Agricultural Education classes or teach a series of weekend classes to those youths in need of this training.

Canby
At Canby High School we offer an Equipment Operations and Maintenance class that has a tractor component. Those that want to get the tractor certification must finish some additional assignments and pass the written and practical tests outlined in the course. This is offered to the students at Canby High School that sign up for this course.

Cove
Cove FFA offers a tractor driving and equipment operation class as part of the Introduction to Agriculture class. The class begins in April and ends in May. There is no cost for the class but students must be enrolled in the Intro to Ag. class. All written tests must be passed with a score of 80% in addition to a driving test.

Harrisburg
Harrisburg has a tractor school each May. The school has been in operation for 25-30 years and is supported by the area farmers and equipment dealers. It runs Tuesday through Friday evenings and all day on Saturday. Sign up is through the High School office.

Imbler
Imbler HS Agriculture Education Program offers the course as a part of the Introductions to Agriculture Mechanics couse in the Spring Term of each year. The Unit of study is conducted from Mid-April to End of May. Offered to any HS (9-12) grade students at no cost. Program utilizes the 4-H Tractor Safety Book, and requires passing all Unit Tests, Driving/Maneuvering Test, and Written Final.

La Grande
La Grande High School has a 9 week course in tractor safety and maintenance using the Safe Operation of Agricultural Equipment as the core curriculum, and supplementing with the 2006 AG 412 curriculum from Oregon State, WSU Tractor safety and UC Davis tractor safety powerpoint. There is no charge for this class and it is an elective class.

Lebanon
I do a free tractor certification course for my Ag 1 students enrolled in my agriculture program. It is done during class and is not open to outside students.

Lost River High School
Provides a tractor safety course as a component of the Agriculture Science and Technology I course. It takes place during the last 6 weeks of the semester. There is no cost to the program, and students must be enrolled in the agriculture class. We use John Deere safety materials and the 4-H tractor books along with driving the school tractor.

Myrtle
I provide tractor safety training to youth at Myrtle Point High School through curriculum in General Agriculture and Agriculture Mechanics, and as part of the Myrtle Point FFA chapter Program of Activities. The textbook I use is Hobart Safe Operations of Agricultural Equipment
published in 1996, which includes 11 units covering safety standards, preventing accidents, understanding instruments and controls, maintenance and safety checks, tractor safety, tractor hitches, hydraulics, and PTO shafts, tractor safety on the road, and handling accident situations. Students also have at least two class periods of behind-the-wheel training, and have the option to attend the Umpqua FFA District Tractor Certification Day and Career Development event.
Additionally, students may earn their certification in class by demonstrating proficiency on a written safety test, in combination with a driving test.

North Lake School
We provide the training at North Lake School through the FFA. It is part of the 8th grade Agriculture/Shop class curriculum. All 8th grade students are required to be in the class. Students who are 14 years of age and pass the written and driving exam qualify for the certificate. The class runs from May 1st though the first week of June.

Redmond High School
I teach Tractor and Equipment Safety as part of the curriculum and at the end of the class if the students pass the 3 tests (70% or better) and complete the work book then I issue them a tractor safety card. This is a unit in my Agriculture Shop Skills class that I teach each fall. There is no cost and its limitation is that they have to be enrolled in my class as a student in the Redmond School District.

Santiam Christian High School
I do a tractor safety class in June, usually the week after school gets out (which equates to the second or third week). It is two days, costs $50 for the book/class, and involves class time as well as drive time on a tractor.

Sutherlin High School offers youth tractor safety certification each fall. Certification is contingent on being enrolled in the Introduction to Agricultural Sciences course and involves classroom instruction, end of unit exam, and a three-part driving practicum hosted by the Douglas County Farm Bureau Young Farmers and Ranchers Committee.
