Oregon Coast from Agate Beach to the California border opens for recreational mussel harvesting
08/31/2009
The Oregon Department of Agriculture announces the opening of all recreational mussel harvest from Agate Beach in Newport south to the California border. Shellfish samples taken last week indicate levels of Paralytic Shellfish Poisoning (PSP) toxins have dropped below the alert level in this section of the Oregon Coast.

However, the Oregon coastline north of Agate Beach to the Columbia River remains closed to recreational mussel harvest, due to elevated PSP levels. The closure includes mussels on the beaches, rocks, jetties, and at the entrances to bays in this section of the Oregon Coast.

ODA will continue to routinely test for shellfish toxins.

Additionally, the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW) has a conservation closure in effect, July 15, 2009 to September 30, 2009. The closure prohibits razor clam harvesting at Clatsop County beaches north of Tillamook Head. All other beaches along the Oregon Coast are open for clamming.

For more information, call the ODA shellfish safety information hotline at 800-448-2474, the Food Safety Division at 503-986-4720, or visit the ODA shellfish closures Web page at http://oregon.gov/ODA/FSD/shellfish_status.shtml.
