The Oregon Department of Agriculture announces an expansion of the recreational mussel harvesting closure due to elevated paralytic shellfish poisoning (PSP) toxin levels. The closure includes mussels found on the beaches, rocks, jetties, and bay entrances from Bob Creek Wayside, south of Yachats, to the mouth of the Columbia River. However, the Oregon coastline south of Bob Creek Wayside to the California border remains open to recreational mussel harvesting. Remember, cooking does not destroy PSP toxin or reduce the risk of contracting PSP. Shellfish harvesters should call the shellfish hotline (800-448-2474) prior to each harvest because shellfish toxin levels can change rapidly and dramatically. Coastal scallops are not affected by this closure when only the adductor muscle is eaten. The consumption of recreationally caught whole scallops is not recommended. Crab are not affected by this level of toxin and are safe to eat. ODA will continue to routinely test for shellfish toxins. Additionally, the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW) has a conservation closure in effect, July 15, 2009 to September 30, 2009. The closure prohibits razor clam harvesting at Clatsop County beaches north of Tillamook Head. All other beaches along the Oregon Coast are open for clamming. For more information, call the ODA shellfish safety information hotline at 800-448-2474, the Food Safety Division at 503-986-4720, or visit the ODA shellfish closures Web page.
