DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
These positions work with deaf/hard of hearing students in the Elementary, Middle School, and/or High School Departments. Teaching assistants assist classroom teachers so they can work with individual students. The Teaching Assistant works with teachers in carrying out students’ Individual Education Program (IEP), one-on-one instruction or small group instruction, assistance in going from one building to another, to preparing bulletin boards and materials for the classroom. Teaching assistants work with groups of students on lessons and activities that have been prepared by the classroom teacher. The teaching assistant may work in the areas of the classroom, residential living facility, swimming pool, dining room, and in the community. Duties include but are not limited to:
- Helps teacher(s) implement behavior modification programs for student(s). This includes observations, collection, recording and interpreting data.
- Prepares and assembles teaching materials as assigned by teacher(s). This includes bulletin board and other display materials and lesson plan-related materials.
- Escorts/supervises student(s) to and from classes and activities. Includes on- and off-campus educational programs, and also may involve occasionally driving a state vehicle.
- Follows teacher-made lesson plans with one or a small group of students.
- Other varied and general duties normally expected of any Teaching Assistant (e.g. minor clean up after student activities, participation, and special activities such as Parents’ Day programs).
WORKING CONDITIONS
This job involves being outside part of every workday. Occasionally, a student becomes combative to staff or other students. Occasional lifting or moving of educational equipment. Exposure to communicable diseases. Works with active deaf and hard-of-hearing children throughout the day. May be required to supervise students during special activities. May work with students who have severe emotional or behavioral problems with whom physical restraint techniques may need to be used. May work with and train teaching assistants, volunteers, college practicum students, and/or student teachers. May be exposed to communicable diseases. Walks around and stands a great deal of the time in order to instruct and assess effectively.
TO QUALIFY
Your PD100 application form will be reviewed to verify that you meet the requirements stated in this section. To receive credit, your application form must clearly show that you have:
- equivalent to a high school diploma and six months of paid or unpaid experience working with or caring for children, preferably in groups; OR
- two years of college courses in Education. To receive credit for coursework, you must submit a photocopy of your transcripts.
These positions require the use of American Sign Language (ASL). You must demonstrate the ability to engage in routine ASL conversations and minimum courtesy requirements and/or able to pass the American Sign Language Proficiency Interview (ASLPI) at level 1 at the time of hire. In addition, you must demonstrate the ability to satisfy routine social demands, travel needs, and limited work requirements in ASL and/or obtain a level 2 rating on the ASLPI within 6 months after your hire date.
IF YOU QUALIFY
With your application materials, you must submit a cover letter, not more than two (2) pages describing your training and/or experience working with children, students, or adults who are Deaf/Hard of Hearing. For each experience include the age of the group members, the learning environment (e.g. school, preschool, private home, group home, day care center, etc.), and your level of responsibility in each setting. Please also address your competency level on the American Sign Language Proficiency Interview (ASLPI), and describe how you learned ASL.
