GENERAL INFORMATION
  • The Oregon Department of Education is recruiting for academic year, intermittent (substitute) positions at the Oregon School for the (OSD) in Salem, Oregon.  For more information about OSD, go to www.osd.k12.or.us.
  • These academic year positions work September through June.  Intermittent indicates a position in which the employee works only when work is available on a substitute basis.  To be considered, you will need to mark either Part-Time (P), Intermittent (I) or Any (B) on the work schedule availability on the application.
  • This recruitment will be used to establish a list of qualified people, and may be used to fill vacancies as they occur.
  • Applicants will be subject to a thorough background investigation.  Adverse background data may be grounds for immediate disqualification.
  • Applicants will be subject to both a Computerized Criminal History check and a fingerprint-based criminal record check.  Conviction of a crime will not automatically preclude an appointment.  The circumstances involved in the conviction will be considered.

Please be aware that due to the economic downturn and subsequent state budget short-fall the Governor has ordered mandatory furloughs for employees.  This position will be required to take furloughs in the biennium 2009-2011.
 
 
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
 
The Registered Nurse in this position, as a member of a health care team, cares for the physical and emotional well-being of the OSD students.  Major duties include:
  • Daily health assessments of students, medication administration, treatments, nursing documentation, and screening.
  • Maintains daily written and oral communication with the dormitory, school, and nursing staff in the management of student health needs.
  • Miscellaneous typical tasks: maintains the environment of the health office facility and supplies; inventories supplies; schedules student screenings.
  • Provides emergency medical care for all students on campus.  Assesses the health care needs of both verbal and nonverbal students who may or may not be able to demonstrate illness and/or injury through traditional methods ( i.e., talking, writing and pointing). Some possible emergency situations that might occur are:  (1) status epilepticus, (2) respiratory distress/arrest, (3) choking, (4) injury through reactive hallucination, (5) plugged ventricular peritoneal shunt, (6) drug toxicity. Provides telephone support to LPNs as needed.
 
WORKING CONDITIONS
 
Work shifts may include day, swing and graveyard. Working conditions may include exposure to infectious diseases, and possible contact with students who may display aggressive behavior. May require lifting and exertion for short periods.
 
 
TO QUALIFY

  • Possess a valid Oregon Registered Professional Nurse's License at the time of appointment.  (Submit a copy to receive credit.)

These positions require the use of American Sign Language (ASL).  You must demonstrate the ability to engage in routine ASL conversations and minimum courtesy requirements and/or able to pass the American Sign Language Proficiency Interview (ASLPI) at level 1 at the time of hire.  In addition, you must demonstrate the ability to satisfy routine social demands, travel needs, and limited work requirements in ASL and/or obtain a level 2 rating on the ASLPI within 6 months after your hire date.
