D. L. Phipps Forest Nursery offers a wide array of seedling sizes for each species grown to meet your planting needs. Except for a few very rapid growing seedlings that grow large in one season (1-0 OUTPLANTING), most of the seedlings are grown in 2 growing seasons as 2-0’s and 1-1’s. When looking at nursery seedling sizes the first number is the number of years in the original sown bed and the second number is the number of years in a transplant bed. D. L. Phipps Forest Nursery, depending on the species, has 3 different sizes of 2-0’s and 1-1’s to help select the seedling size that best meets your site and objectives.
Seedling size is determined for stem diameter or caliper measured just above the stem swelling called the "root collar", while shoot height is measured from the tip of the terminal or top bud to the root collar. During winter harvest from late November until March, seedlings are dug and sorted by size for your order. Most seedlings exceed our minimum shoot height and stem caliper. Each year groups of seedlings develop differently due to differences in soils and weather so that some years a particular species is shorter or taller or even slightly stouter.
When selecting a seedling for a site consider these three characteristics of size:
- Stem diameter
- Shoot height
- Root mass
Remember when selecting seedling size that the stem diameter and root system size (root volume) needs to be large enough to support the top of the seedling.
2-0’s are grown in the original sown bed for two growing seasons at different densities for the standard, large and ex-large sizes available for a less expensive seedling. All 2-0 lots will have a variety of sizes due to the uneven spacing in the bed as the seed germinates. The 2-0 large has a larger caliper and more root mass (this seedling size is a nicely proportioned seedling); the 2-0 ex-large has a large caliper, a large root mass, and a top with lots of laterals.
1-1’s are grown in the original sown bed for one growing season, then transplanted at a precise density to develop the target size for one more growing season. The 1-1 seedling is more expensive, but what you pay for is a bigger caliper and root mass with lots of fine roots, producing a good proportioned seedling with consistent sizes. Large caliper and root mass help the seedling survive on harsh sites. The 1-1 standard is a very well balanced seedling with a small top, nice caliper, and lots of fine roots; the 1-1 large has a large caliper and top with a large root mass; the 1-1 ex-large has a very large caliper, a large root mass, and a top with lots of laterals.
Douglas-fir is offered in 4 sizes to meet the specific needs of your planting site and your objectives. All 4 Douglas-fir seedling sizes are grown for two growing seasons. Although they are similar in age, they are cultured differently to produce 4 different populations of Douglas-fir seedlings based upon final size and form. You should select the size of Douglas-fir based upon your site, your desire for planting and post-planting care.
All other species of seedlings grown at the D. L. Phipps Forest Nursery are offered in one or two sizes. The sizes offered are determined by the best sizes suitable for each species.
